Mokoro Trip Safaris

The Most Serene Way to Experience Botswana's Okavango Delta)

Early Kingfisher Safaris offers intimate, eco-friendly mokoro excursions as a highlight of our mobile safaris in the Okavango Delta and surrounding private concessions (such as Khwai and Moremi buffer zones). Guided by skilled local polers from nearby communities, these silent canoe trips provide a peaceful, water-level perspective on one of Africa's greatest wetlands—no engine noise, just the gentle splash of the pole and the calls of nature.

Key Features of Our Mokoro Excursions

  • Duration & Timing: Typically 2–3 hours, usually in the cooler morning hours (starting around 6–7 AM) for calm waters and active wildlife. Sunset options available in select seasons.
  • Group Size: Intimate—maximum 2 guests per mokoro + 1 expert poler (private mokoro available on request for couples or photographers).
  • Modern Comfort: We use stable fibreglass mokoros (environmentally friendly alternative to traditional wooden ones) with cushioned low seats and backrests—no more sitting on the floor!
  • Safety First: Life jackets provided, shallow channels selected (water rarely over 1–2 meters), and polers trained to avoid hippos or crocs while maintaining safe viewing distances.
  • Community Focus: Polers are local Bayei or Hambukushu experts, many from Maun-area villages—your fees directly support their families and conservation efforts.

What to Expect

  • Glide silently through reed-lined channels and lily-covered lagoons.
  • Close encounters with reed frogs, malachite kingfishers, African jacanas ("Jesus birds" walking on lilies), and shy antelope like sitatunga.
  • Opportunities to spot elephants swimming, hippos in deeper pools, and a symphony of birdlife (over 400 species in the Delta).
  • Optional add-on: Combine with a short guided island walk for tracking and plant lore.

This isn't just an excursion—it's the soul of the Okavango, blending tranquility with intimate wildlife moments.
